IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Are you aged between 17 – 23 yrs old?

Do you want a full unrestricted motorcycle licence?

EXISTING REGULATIONS

17 – 18 years old

Can only take the tests on a 125cc machine and will only get a full licence to ride 125cc max11kw(14bhp) machine until a further test is taken, which they can do at 19 years old.

At 19 years old must take the same tests again on a 20kw(26bhp) – 35kw(47bhp) machine of at least 245cc to get a 35kw(47bhp) restricted licence for a further two years.

At 24 years old or 2 years after taking the 35kw test the same tests must be taken again on a 50kw(66bhp) machine of at least 595cc to obtain a full unrestricted licence.

This means that 17 – 18 year olds will be better off staying on L plates until they are 19 years old.

19 – 23 year olds

Will have to take two sets of identical tests 2 years apart or when you reach 24 years old whichever comes sooner to get a full unrestricted licence as there is no automatic upgrade from 35kw to unrestricted licence. Also the bike that you restrict can not be more than 70kw, approx 95bhp. This means you cannot restrict high powered sports bikes to the 35kw requirement.

24+ year olds

Direct Access test available for an unrestricted licence will be on a 50kw(66bhp) machine of at least 595cc
